The Hunt by Blunell The Hunt by Blunell
This was inspired by a dream I had two days ago. A weird and overly long dream in which I was only a spectator (something that never happened to me before); and which was telling me a whole story, though I forgot most of it.

About the story:

The only thing I recall is the action was set in ancient times, in a wild snowy place like North Scandinavia or Alaska, in a world ruled by ancient spirits of Nature. It revolved around a tribe of people struggling everyday to survive in the Wild.

At the beginning, the tribe had taken a lost child in, but had started to dread him because it had weird powers (I forgot which ones) and was hence believed to be a demon.
Years later, when the child had grown into a strong man, he and the other young men of the tribe went for their usual hunt. Unfortunately, no animal showed up, but they found a small wooden house in the forest. Judging from the furniture, they identified it as being a witch house and burned it down. Soon after, they stumbled upon the actual witch and her familiar, an Arctic fox; they captured and bound both of them to bring them to the tribal leader, with the intention of eating the fox and spending some good time with the witch. But the Chief warned them about how witches were cursed, so that mating with them or even staring at them for too long could drive a man mad; and decided that they would sell her as a slave to the nearest town's upcoming fair instead.
The only one who disapproved of treating the witch like cattle was the "Demon".  After hearing the witch's plea for sparing the life of her familiar, he released the fox, and claimed some animal should have bitten the rope that tied it while everyone was sleeping. By doing so, he earned some respect and gratitude from the witch, but also mistrust from some tribal folks.

...Then, I seriously don't remember all the adventures there were (too bad, 'cause there were enough to fill a novel with them!), but I roughly recall that the "Demon" eventually realized that he didn't belong to the tribe (more exactly, no one there liked him, and the folks started to accuse him of befriending the witch), so he released her and the two of them fled. Afterwards, they did brave stuff together but I don't even remember if there was an antagonist in this story or not. Only that there was an actual, interesting plot, but bam! I forgot everything when I woke up. Damn.

The artwork shows the witch's capture. The man holding the rope is the "Demon" (the other hunters jokingly said he should be the one to carry the witch to the camp since both of them were alike, "the same kind of vermin"). Even at that time, the "Demon" wasn't entirely okay about capturing and enslavering another human, a woman moreover (yup, there was sexism, since it was set during ancient times in a traditionnal tribe), that's why he's not looking at her with the same contempt as the others.

About the artwork:
I really like the artwork overall. I think it's one of my best, if not the best in terms of composition, depth, mood, characterization and story-telling. I especially like the work on the snow, pine trees, and mountains.
The fox looks like a piglet though .__.

VERY COOL! The people are great! But for me, the scenery truly shines!! I love a good fresh snowfall, it's calming after seeing all the "dead" trees barren landscapes. Just a really great job! ^_^

Wooow such beautifully  detailed artwork, dear! The snow, mountains, pines, are painted realistically! I love the soft pink as lighting touch in this drawing! Moreover, the shadows on this snow landscape done beautifully. Looking from the thumbnail size, i thought this was a photo! You painted the atmosphere pretty well~
What an  interesting story behind this drawing~ However looking to the artwork, what a poor little wolf.... ehh, fox! Aww how dare you capture that fluffy creature, you evil demon!

Good thing is that the "Demon" will be the one to release the poor ball of fluff into the Wild, ha~

As a Wiccan the story hurts me deeply, but at least the picture is nice. :)

Oh... I'm very, very sorry the story hurt you... :( Can I ask you what seems especially hurting? Maybe the fact the witch was so badly treated by the tribe?

It would be interesting for me to know, because even though I'm not a Wiccan myself, I do believe in the spiritual forces of Nature, and offending anyone who shares a similar spirituality is the last thing I want.
Indeed, I'm currently rebuilding the universe for the dream I had, and its lore is actually inspired by both Wicca and old celtic traditions. In my story, witches were once respected before a man with a different religion came and forbade the cult of Nature. The tribesmen's behavior finds its roots in the wrong beliefs this new religion had spread.

The way the witch was treated is where it related to me personally. I've seen far too much injustice like that happen to someone just because they're a witch.

Don't be sorry, it wasn't your fault. :)

It looks so good it almost looks like an actual photograph. :) (which all your works do, btw)
Love the colors you used. Everything in this picture looks amazing, from the whole background, to the expressions of the people, to the cute little fox.

If you mean how long did I take to paint this, I spent around 20 hours (I'm a slow worker) :)
(If you were asking something else... then I apologize, I'm not a native speaker so I sometimes misunderstand things ^^')

Great work! You have got a remarkable and beautiful style.

I really like this amazing piece of art, which shows so many lovely details.

The hair of the witch is a very striking spot of color and it clearly shows, that she is the most important character in this artwork.
Her clothes seem to be a bit too precious though. Wearing clothes liket this, she could very well be a noblewoman instead of a witch.
It is pretty exciting to see her getting captured and being tied up in ropes. Her facial expression reveals, that she is angry about her situation, but also desperate and a little bit frightened.

The guy looks rather peaceful somehow. I wouldn't expect him to treat her in such a strict and harsh way ;)

Nice background story!

Thank you very much for taking the time to write this insightful comment! :) I agree with you when you say the woman's clothes are too precious, she indeed looks like a chatelain. Her clothes weren't supposed to look that clean and refined when I had the scene in mind, but I'm not skilled enough when it comes to design rags and worn-out things (I'm just starting to be comfortable with basic clothing). I need to practise on this :)

(The guy's actually nice, and not pleased at all to treat her like that x))

Oh, I'm only starting to make decent-looking works. I'm 24, and until recently my stuff looked clumsy; I discovered what seems to be a fitting style for me around last June :p
